Monster WRT comes alive in Mexico

Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino stepped up to the World Rally Championship this year, with the newly formed Monster World Rally Team. Rally Mexico was the first event for the team, and a chance to show the world what they could do. Turns out, they can do a lot. Setting top ten stage times, and competing against the likes of Matthew Wilson and Kimi Raikkonen, Block and Gelsomino turned heads in their first event. A "rookie mistake" caught the pair out and forced a retirement, but under super rally rules, they were able to return, and finished 18th overall - a position that would likely have sat about ten spots higher without the off. Block and Gelsomino were also able to set a second fastest time after the first split on stage 21, before a puncture slowed the two. "In the WRC, we had heard of Ken Block, but more for his stunts than his driving, but after his performance in Mexico, I think it is very clear to everyone that he has the potential to become a competitive WRC driver,” says M-Sport Managing Director Malcolm Wilson. “For his first WRC event, he did extremely well." Block has competed with Gelsomino in nearly every rally of his career, and has spent a great deal of effort to build skill and experience that would stand him in good stead on the world stage, including competing in both Canada and New Zealand to build up experience in two pass recce, something that isn't done in the United States, but is critical for success in the WRC. The next event for the team is Rally Turkey, April 16-18, 2010.
