This weekend is the thirty first running of the Rallye Baie-Des-Chaleurs, held in New Richmond, Quebec. The third round of the Canadian Rally Championship, the event spans over two days and the 2008 edition has the largest entry of any national event in Canada this year. Close to the US rally hotbed of New England, this event has a strong field of US drivers.

After the season opener in Maniwaki, Quebec, Antoine L’Estage lead the championship with a win at Rallye Perce Neige. Andrew Comrie-Picard was in a close second and Pat Richard sat in third.

Tables turned completely in Calgary at the Rocky Mountain Rally in May, when both Antoine and Andrew suffered mechanical problems and were forced out of the rally. Pat Richard was able to bring home the win in the debut event for the 2008 Subaru Impreza STI, and in doing so, took a big lead in the Championship.

“I’m going into Baie leading the championship, and would like to come out of it the same way,” explains Richard. “If a battle breaks out for the win, I probably won’t join in, but we’ll see.” Richard is first on the road tomorrow, as teams head out to complete the first leg of the event, six stages running into the night.

With only six events in the Canadian Rally Championship, failure to score points at any one round can cost a Championship, and Richard is keen to get Subaru a title in the year of their return to competition in Canada.

Antoine L’Estage is fresh off a win at the last US round, the Susquehannock Trail Rally in Pennsylvania earlier in the month. The car is prepared and should enable Antoine to score some strong championship points and try to retake the lead in the championship.

There are plenty of people on hand to fill up the top end of the order. Ken Block is up from the US with his new 2008 Subaru Impreza STI. Jon Nichols is also expected to do well in his Mitsubishi EVO VI, and Simon Losier, who had his best ever finish at Calgary has an even more prepared car for this event.

Andrew Comrie-Picard has opted to leave his EVO IX aside for this event, to keep it safe leading up to the X Games. Instead, ACP will be running the Mitsubishi EVO IV he ran from 2002 to 2006. “We’ve had some good runs in this car, a few wins. It will be a lot of fun.” At the moment, ACP leads the Rally America Championship and maintains that is where his focus lies.

There are plenty of entries at this event who are local to the region. Twelve teams from the area are on hand to test their mettle and impress the locals. Martin Gauvin and Craig Henderson will be two drivers to watch. Both have done very well here in the past.
